Hawaii Works to Plug Into Renewable Energy

Honolulu Star Advertiser -- With a surge of renewable energy projects in the pipeline, Hawaii's electric utilities are working overtime to modernize their generation systems that for decades have relied on traditional oil-fired power plants.

Recent installations of photovoltaic panels in Kaunakaki, Molokai, mean an estimated 15 percent of electrical generation comes from the sun, pushing the circuit to the maximum level.

The issue is top priority with the goal of generating 40 percent from renewable sources by 2030.

The intermittent nature of renewable electricity, mainly solar & wind. That creates instability that, if not offset with generation from firm sources, could cause customers to lose power.

Plans proceed to bring 400 megawatts of electricity to the island via an undersea cable from wind farms.

Rocky,

Feb 16, 2010 ... In the second hour of Rush Limbaugh's nationwide radio show Monday, February 15, he read the opening portion of our “Wind Energy's Ghosts”.

Yes, more "fair and balanced" reporting.

==================

Actually, here is some real news on the project.

"In 1987 the Kamaoa Wind Farm began operation with thirty-seven Mitsubishi 250 kW wind turbines with an operationally typical total peak output of 7.5 MW.[21] By 2006 the turbines at 18°59'33?N 155°40'5?W? / ?18.9925°N 155.66806°W? / 18.9925; -155.66806? (Kamaoa Wind Farm) were falling into disrepair, and they were finally shut down on August 15, 2006. At the end of August 2006, components for a new set of wind turbines were transported to South Point. The Pakini Nui project consists of 14 General Electric wind turbines constructed at 18°58'20?N 155°41'21?W? / ?18.97222°N 155.68917°W? / 18.97222; -155.68917? (Pakini Nui Wind Farm), about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from the old Kamaoa wind farm. Completed in April 2007, Pakini Nui supplies up to 20.5 MW of power to the island electricity grid of Hawaiian Electric Industries.[22] The wind farm is operated by Tawhiri Power, LLC. It is the southern-most wind farm in the United States.[23]

Electric just makes so much more sense there. The market for oil will start to dry up, and the price will rise as distribution shrinks, further accelerating the trend. Soon oil/gas fueled vehicles will be extinct.

"...reach its goal of generating 40 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030..."

Only 40%? In 20 years? Seems the goal should be loftier than that!

Good for Hawaii - that state probably does have the best chance to produce solar power as a real alternative.

Seems to me they are overlooking a major source of renewable energy that they should have an over abundance of: tidal power.

Good for the Pineapples. Looks like they are getting their act together out there in the middle of nowhere. Last time I was there I saw a lot of wave action that never let up. Tap that, people.

Hawaii has little in the way of renewable energy. They do have tide, wind, solar and geothermal. Produce that as power and you will have a winner

Hawaii is well suited for this type of thing. It is more difficult for the continental United States to do this. Sun Factor folks!
