Cannot.
Perhaps a more important question would be:
Do you think the USA can prevent it's reliance on foreign oil from reaching 90% two decades from now?
That will be an interesting challenge.

I think we could, but it will take a concentrated effort similar to landing man on the moon. Our government certainly has no desire or inclination to do anything, which is not suprising.

Sure it can, but it will take a determined effort to push alternative energy sources. High prices help to spur this on.

No, I don't think so. Bush and his buddies have too much at stake, and It's too big of social and life change for Americans to go through. It would be nice to see the U.S. finicially independant from foreign oil/fuel

Look, we're never going to be self-sufficient on oil. Best we can hope for is to eliminate our imports from the "bad guys".

Do you think the U.S. can end its reliance on foreign oil sources within the next two decades, or not? Cannot not the way we are keeping a mind set. We were starting with solar 35 yrs ago and blew it. Geo thermal not moving on it. Solar dragging our feet. Wind power starting to move and that will only be a small percent but it's a start, thank you.

To BoerneWatch, re: "our dependence will lessen significantly"
Wow, that would be great but I just don't see how. This is all about supply and demand.
The American public loves their pickups and SUVs. So there is a lot of demand and I don't see how it is going to decrease because people are buying bigger gas guzzlers all the time. So over the last 10 years American consumption has risen 30%.
Dispite a ton of drilling the last 5-10 years, there really haven't been a lot of huge discoveries in the USA. So in the last 10 years domestic production has declined by a factor of 2 - from 18 million barrels a day to 9 million.
The US is a lot more dependant of foriegn oil today than it was 10 years ago. And the factors causing that seem to be accelerating. So I expect it to be much worse 10 years from now. If I had to guestimate I would say that in ten years American domestic oil production will decline by a factor of two again to 5 million barrels. American consumption will continue to grow probably 30% to 60 million barrels a day. Dependance on foreign oil will increase to more 90% of their consumption.

It's ridicuous to believe that our dependence on foreign oil can be eliminated in 20 years. We can't change out our infrastrucure that fast to accommodate alternate fuels. Besides, there's nothing wrong with importing oil. We import all kinds of commodities necessary to our way of life. The important thing is to reduce (not eliminate) our imports so that unfriendly nations don't control our destiny.

ə hmmmm. texas, i notice your grammar and spelling skills are lacking today. ☺ that aside, i do not think that "can" is the operative word here. the word is "must". we likely will be _forced_ to end our dependence on foreign oil, as the muslim countires eventually will stop selling to us in retribution for our anti-terrorist moves. so, i'd say, we'd _better_ find a way to end it before that happens! ə

twowheel, you're such the optomist. I believe, however, that this country can do anything it puts it's mind to. We just have to quit playing politics, develop a plan of action, and put in place.

"Energy independence" is a phony issue. We import a lot of things essential to our standard of living. The issue is making sure we have reliable suppliers.

The U.S. cannot create MORE oil, but we could easily cut back our dependance on oil! Bio-diesel is cheap to make, it's used cooking oil and lye.
Alternate fuels have been around all along (most of the cars of 1900 ran on strait ethanol ) Electric and steam powered cars existed in 1920 Gasoline wasn't even a major player in the first few decades of American autos.

The USA consumption continues to increase. The USA only produces about 1/3 of their needs. So eliminate the dependance on foreign crude today would require a decrease by a factor of 3 in consumption. That will not happen soon, Americans love their pick-ups and SUVs too much.
And it will get even worse in five years. The USA has about 6% of the world's proven reserves. But they consume 40% of the oil. So the USA reserves are being depleted much faster than the rest of the worlds. And at the current rate they will be gone in 5-8 years including the Alaskan, Atlantic and Pacific fields.
American dependance on foreign crude will rapidly increase over the next 10 years. Hopefully most of the suppliers are friendly like Canada.
