Study: 'Cash for clunkers' had stronger influence than estim

The Detroit News -- Last year's "cash for clunkers" incentives program stoked demand for cars and trucks without pulling sales forward, according to a study by the Maritz Automotive Research Group.

"Our findings not only provide strong evidence that many more vehicles were sold as a direct result of the incentive program than were previously estimated, but they also largely debunk the myth that 'cash for clunkers' mortgaged future car and truck sales," said Dave Fish, vice president, Maritz Automotive Research Group.

"In fact, the program resulted in sales of vehicles to people who don't normally buy them."

Toledo, Ohio-based Maritz surveyed nearly 36,000 consumers who bought a new car or truck between July and August 2009, when the Car Allowance Rebate System was in effect.

GM is reappointing a large percentage of the dealerships they abandoned. I believe that is a good sign for the C4C program. Hopefully more manufacturers will follow suit. That excludes Toyota until they get their crap totally fixed.

I know a few people who were told that their 'old' cars were not up to standards for the program. One car was a 1986 Buick with less than 100,000 milles on it.

I think that the jury is still out on this one. That is whither this program worked or not. It certainly started to sell cars.

BWAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAAA! I love it when I get it right and hundreds of other Goobers were just wrong! It is now so interesting that the same posters now have new arguments why they were right. HMMM.

lol @ the nuts that will now call this a lie.

Can't admit that they were actually wrong and had no clue what they were talking about. So instead they just continue to state things they know aren't true.

I'm still happy with my old heap because it's paid 4. 5 more mpg can't make up for 5 years of payments.

You got it right FastAndy!!!

Poor, poor planning that was totally without thought. It certainly did wonders for all but our USA manufacturers. Please don't forget all the Korean large appliances that have now overwhelmed our domestic manufacturers in Sears, Home Depot, Best Buy, Lowe's, etc.

Getting cars that average 15 miles a gallon, scraping them for recycled metal and replacing them with higher mileage cars is positive and means less of our money going to the Arab oil nations.

Jobs were created and at least it stabilized the rapid loss of jobs caused by the prior administration.

OK so inventory was reduced, older 15mpg cars/trucks were replaced with 24.5mpg cars/trucks, a few jobs were saved, but it did NOT jump start sales. it was a flash in the pan.
tax dollars down a rat hole.
and people with older cars could not get a new one if they didnt have a JOB.

People trade in their old American vehicle and buy a Toyota with taxpayers money (credit). Then the old vehicle is crushed so it is unusable. There are so many things wrong with this thinking.

With leaders like this, bankruptcy will be the inevitable end to this country as we know it.

YeahBut - - cost us about 8 tax dollars for every fuel dollar saved. That's before people who shouldn't normally have bought one hear from RepoMan. It's your (and our) money at work. I suppose 7 dollar net is Change and Hope.

It was a good way to move the surplus inventory, and boost sales at a slow time in the Economy. Although, I thought that the incentive should have been limited to those vehicles produced in the United States.

waynemustang wrote on Mar 9, 2010 6:47:00 PM "Why should I be taxed for someones trade in that is not mine?"

For the same reason for when YOU use services that YOU don't pay for. For instance, when you use roads outside of your County or your State. THAT is one of the beauty's of Taxes: It's NOT just you putting into the pot ... it's EVERYBODY! Sometimes you use things that you don't pay for and sometimes you pay for things that you don't use .... it all pretty much washes out, or should.

Besides, how much did you actually pay in taxes last year .... 20% of your income? 30%? Figure out what that was, how much that was in a dollar amount. If you want that money back because you feel you didn't get your money's worth, you're in luck. I know of some people (that live in some other countries) that will give you TWICE that amount. All you have to do is go live where they live and do what they do for a living ... and they'll come and live where you live and do what you do for a living. ALL THAT MONEY, PLUS someplace to lay your head down and work when you awaken!! No? How about for THREE times the amount? FOUR times?

THANKS Obama Still making my payments and the neighbors are real glad I got rid of that piece of s*%# (worth - $100)that just sat in the drive....no polution there!....BUT if we win 'the' lottery I'd buy Ford next time cause they did NOT take the money...(not proud, I took the $9,500.00) What a country!!
